Day 2 you drive down the centre of the North Island through the green fertile farmlands to Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake. Taupo will be your base camp for the next three days. From there you can discover Tongariro National Park which is a world heritage site and home to the best one day walk (arguably in the world!), visit the geo thermal wonderlands of Orakei Korako and Wai O Tapu and visit the mighty Huka Falls. We also recommend a sailing cruise on Taupo Lake to discover an impressive Maori carving on the rock cliff.
The multi-award winning Whakaipo Lodge, a boutique luxury lodge perfectly positioned close to Lake Taupo.
Today you head to Tauranga, the waterfront playground where New Zealanders go on holiday! On your drive to Tauranga, you may want to stop at Cambridge, a charming, English like village for lunch and spot of shopping or at Hobbiton, home of the Hobbits from Lord of Rings. If you are interested in a cultural experience, a stop at Rotorua to enjoy an insightful Maori Village tour can be arranged.
At night, near Tauranga you may choose to go on a kayak trip to a canyon covered with glow worms, a truly unique experience in NZ.
