Getting to New Zealand

Once upon a time, getting here was as much of an adventure as the experience itself. Happily, it’s very different today: flights to New Zealand are available from many international destinations. Depending where you’re coming from, there are a number of airports that you can fly into, so you’re close to where you want to be.

These airlines listed fly to New Zealand from around the world. We recommend you contact the airlines directly for detailed information about flights. Online specials are normally very attractive if you book in advance.

Major airlines offer direct flights to New Zealand from Australia, USA, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand and Chile. Connecting flights from these countries link New Zealand with the rest of the world.

Most international flights arrive into Auckland Airport, located in the northern part of the North Island. Christchurch, Wellington, Rotorua, Queenstown and Dunedin airports also receive a small number of international flights.

Flying is definitely the quickest and cheapest way to get to New Zealand. It is possible to arrive by sea, but there are no international passenger ferries, so unless you own a boat this means joining a cruise, crewing on a private yacht, or paying for your passage on a cargo ship (a rewarding experience for those who like sea journeys and have plenty of time).

Cruising is another popular way to get to, and explore, the country. Most cruises to New Zealand depart from Australia and the Pacific Islands and some are round-the-world journeys.
